🌊 Why Does Vizag Have So Many Names?

Visakhapatnam, Vizagapatam, Vizag, Waltair… if you’ve lived here long enough, you’ve probably heard all of them. But they each come from a different chapter of the city. 👀

📍 Visakhapatnam — The official name of the city. A traditional explanation connects it with Visakeswara, a shrine believed to have existed in the area.

📜 Vizagapatam — The name commonly used in British-era records. It was an English rendering of Visakhapatnam.

💙 Vizag — The short form that stuck with people. Simple, familiar and now probably the name most of us use every day.

🏙️ Waltair — Not actually another name for the whole city. It was an old locality associated with Valuteru, a name linked to a local stream. Over time, the name became Waltair.

That’s what makes the city interesting — sometimes, even the name you're using carries a little piece of its history.
