🎬 The Story of Vizag’s Old Single-Screen Theatres

Before multiplexes and online booking, watching a film in Vizag meant long queues, hand-painted posters and cheering inside a packed single-screen theatre. 🍿
➡️ Poorna, Saraswati, Navarang and Prabhat Talkies were among the city’s early cinema landmarks. Many eventually closed, but their names still bring back memories for older generations.
🎞️ Leelamahal, established around 1965, was reportedly Vizag’s first air-conditioned theatre. Jagadamba, inaugurated in 1970, became so famous that the entire surrounding area came to be known as Jagadamba Centre.
The city’s movie culture also grew around theatres such as Chitralaya, Jyothee, Melody, Geeth Sangeeth, Rama Talkies and Sangam Sarat. Some disappeared, some became multiplexes, while others upgraded their screens and sound systems to survive. 🎥✨
For Vizag, these theatres were never just places to watch films. They were meeting points, local landmarks and a memorable part of growing up in the city. ❤️
