šŸ How the Steel Plant Changed the Shape of Vizag

In 1970, the Central Government announced its decision to establish a major steel plant in Visakhapatnam. What followed transformed not only the city’s economy, but also its physical growth. šŸ—ļø

āž”ļø Construction attracted thousands of workers, engineers and families from across India and abroad. New homes, shops and transport services began developing around Gajuwaka, Kurmannapalem and nearby areas.

šŸ˜ļø Ukkunagaram, the Steel Plant Township, grew into a planned mini-city with residential sectors, schools, hospitals, parks, markets, sports facilities and places of worship.

The plant also pushed Vizag’s expansion towards the south and supported many transport, logistics, engineering and small businesses. It helped turn Gajuwaka from a quieter suburban area into one of the city’s busiest industrial and residential centres. šŸš›

Vizag Steel did more than produce steel, it created communities, livelihoods and an entirely new side of the city. ā¤ļø
